VACANCIES

SACKLER LABORATORY

Are you looking for a PhD or Postdoc position in the field of experimental astrophysics/chemistry ? Do you have the correct background ? Then this is the right place to look.

There is currently a VACANCY in my group:

PhD position (1+3 yrs): Surface formation routes of interstellar molecules.

This project comprises the study of reactions in interstellar ices. Thin ices are deposited with monolayer
precision under ultra high vacuum conditions and chemistry is monitored using reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The goal of the project is to find molecular pathways that result in the formation of complex molecules as observed through radio astronomy in the interstellar medium

The position is laboratory based, but in the case this is anticipated, a 20% observational component is possible.

The optimum starting date is summer 2012.

Contact me under linnartz@strw.leidenuniv.nl, please send a short motivation letter, a CV, and the names of two persons I can contact for further information.

FURTHERMORE

There are possibilities to support an application through one of the NWO or EU programs.

Send a short email to linnartz at strw.leidenuniv.nl and let me know WHO you are, WHY you would like to work in my group and WHICH qualifications you possess that make you the ideal candidate to be considered.

Have also a look to the following opportunities NWO offers:

RUBICON GRANT

This (compatitive) grant allows to visit the Netherllands as a post-doc for a period of 2 years. This grant is accessible for PhDs of all nationalities but only in the 6 months prior or after your graduation date. You have to apply at NWO (the Dutch organization for scientific research) – see http://www.nwo.nl.

Rubicon applications rounds take place three times during the year. You have to write a short research proposal and the application has to be supported by a number of letters of recommendation. Look at the homepage of NWO for the next deadline.

Rubicon applications are not refereed but judged by a broad committee.

VENI GRANT

This grant allows 3 years of research, funded by NWO, on one of our experimental setups or as theoretical support for one of the running projects. This grant is particularly suited for persons with at least 1 or 2 years postdoctoral experience and with a clear and strong scientific profile. The application is open for all nationalities but a link with the Netherlands should exist. See for further details http://www.nwo.nl. VENI application rounds take place once a year. Only very good and excellent research proposals are granted.

VENI applications are peer reviewed and candidates have an opportunity to comment to the referee reports. A jury judges whether candidates are invited to present their work for the commission that decides which proprosals are granted. See http://www.nwo.nl for further information.

Other possibilities may exist through EU excange programs.

MARIE CURIE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

For persons from (associated) EU member states Marie Curie intra- or incoming postdoctoral fellowships are supported. The selection procedure takes place typically once a year. A post-doc can apply for a maximum of two years of full support. More information is available from http://cordis.europa.eu.int/mariecurie-actions/.

The applicant is expected to write a detailed (and rather long) application focusing on research and training program. A small number of experts in the fields judges the applications on a number of aspects (far beyond the science part).

Finally,

GREENBERG FELLOWSHIP

Once every second year the Greenberg foundation offers to a PhD student from a developing country the possibility of staying 9 months in the Sackler laboratory. This position is broadly advertised.

Currently, the applications for Greenberg Fellowship V are running (and accepted until 30.11.2011). Please visit this site for more information.

Applications are invited with detailed information on person, motivation and research plan. See the Greenberg Fellow section for an update.
