I'm a Postdoc in the Astronomy Instrumentation group at Leiden Observatory working on two major infrared instrumentation projects: MIRI for JWST and METIS for the European Extremely Large Telescope.
Before coming to Leiden, I obtained my BSc, MSci and PhD degrees in Astronomy from University College London in the UK. My PhD title was 'Lightweight deformable mirrors for ground- and space-based imaging systems', supervised by Dr. Peter Doel. I previously also worked at UCL's Mullard Space Science Lab in Holmbury St. Mary (UK) as a mechanical engineer and at ESO in Garching (Germany) as a press intern.
I'm interested in technological aspects of astronomy, including the internet, which is revolutionising the way we do science and talk about it. The Web 2.0 in particular has opened up exciting new avenues for collaboration and communication, both within the science community and towards a broader audience. I helped organise of the second .Astronomy workshop 30 November to 4 December 2009 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, which was a fantastic success.
