Naomi Greenberg Slovin
23 April 1923 - 19 August 2015

It is with great sadness that we learned that Naomi Greenberg died on 19 August 2015 at the age of 92 years young. Naomi who was married to Mayo Greenberg, Professor of Laboratory Astrophysics contributed enormously to the life of the Sterrewacht over many years. She was a highly accomplished musician, a gifted counselor/ therapist and above all a warm vivacious and kind person. The hospitality of the Greenberg family was legendary. She hosted many memorable dinners for students, staff and distinguished visitors.

We are particularly indebted to Naomi and the Greenberg family for their generous donation that enablesd the Mayo Greenberg Fellowship Prize fund to be set up. This has supported several promising students from developing countries, brought them to Leiden and launched them on paths to international scientific careers.

One of the most astonishing aspect of Naomi's life occurred in her eighties after Mayo's death. In 2003, 2 years after Mayo's death, she returned to her native Baltimore, where her older sister Vivienne was a prominent actress. Naomi then embarked on a new career as a dramaturg. Her first play written when she was aged 83, was an outstanding success and she went on to write a second successful play for her sister's 90th birthday two years later.

Naomi Greenberg was a remarkable lady who we shall miss dearly. A memorial service is being held for her at the Everyman Theater in Baltimore on 31 August.
