Astronomen en fysici starten Science community voor eLISA-ruimtemissie

Dit jaar selecteert de Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie ESA de wetenschapsgebieden voor de komende twee grote ruimtemissies. Als een van de onderwerpen gravitatiestraling wordt, willen Nederlandse astronomen en fysici via een nieuw samenwerkingsverband lid worden van het Europese eLISA-consortium, en zo toegang krijgen tot de wetenschappelijke data. Alessandro Patruno wins VIDI grant

Allessandro, who will start at Leiden Observatory in the summer of 2013 taking advantage of Simon Portegies Zwart's AMUSE-team, will study neutron stars by using X-ray space telescopes, ground based telescopes and a new innovative instrument that he will build. Water maken bij 260 graden onder nul

Onderzoekers van het Laboratorium voor Astrofysica zijn erin geslaagd om water te maken onder omstandigheden zoals die in de ruimte heersen. In speciale apparatuur werd vastgevroren zuurstof gebombardeerd met waterstofatomen. Euclid consortium-meeting in Leiden

Vierhonderd wetenschappers en afgevaardigden van de ruimtevaartindustrie uit 14 landen komen deze week bijeen in Leiden voor de jaarlijkse Euclid consortium-meeting. Euclid is de Europese ruimtetelescoop die in 2020 wordt gelanceerd en is bedoeld om misschien wel het grootste mysterie binnen de hedendaagse astronomie te onderzoeken: de versnelde expansie van het heelal door ‘donkere energie’. 50th anniversary of discovery of quasars by Leiden graduate Maarten Schmidt

On 16 March 1963, Maarten Schmidt, a Leiden graduate working at the California Institute of Technology, published a paper that shook the astronomical world. The bright small radio sources that had recently been discovered were not strange stars within our galaxy, as had previously been thought. A spectrum of the brightest of these quasi-stellar radio sources or "quasars", 3C 273 showed a series of strong mysterious emission lines. Schmidt realised that the wavelengths of these lines could be explained as due to hydrogen shifted to the red by 16%. This was completely unexpected and indicated that 3C273 is moving away from us with a huge velocity of almost 50,000 km/s and located several billion light-years away. Although the nature of quasars was then not completely understood, their discovery was clearly a landmark discovery, because they provided an exciting new tool for studying the Universe at earlier times than had been possible until then. We now know that quasars are the flaring nuclei of galaxies that are undergoing gigantic explosions. Maarten Schmidt, obtained his PhD at Leiden Observatory in 1956, working with Jan Oort and received several awards for his discovery, including the Kavli Prize for Astrophysics in 2008. ALMA herschrijft geschiedenis van stellaire ‘babyboom’ heelal

Waarnemingen met de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) laten zien dat de hevigste geboortegolven van sterren in het heelal veel eerder plaatsvonden dan tot nu toe werd gedacht. De resultaten verschijnen in een reeks artikelen die op 14 maart 2013 in het tijdschrift Nature en de Astrophysical Journal verschijnen. Mogelijk protoplaneet in ‘stellaire baarmoeder’ waargenomen

Waarschijnlijk hebben astronomen met ESO’s Very Large Telescope voor het eerst een planeet-in-wording waargenomen die nog in een dikke schijf van gas en stof genesteld zit. De ontdekking is gedaan door een internationaal team van astronomen, onder wie Matthew Kenworthy van de Universiteit Leiden. Nieuw type telescoop kan mogelijk buitenaards leven ontdekken

Een team van Nederlandse sterrenkundigen heeft laten zien dat met een nieuw type telescoop mogelijk al in de komende 25 jaar aanwijzingen voor buitenaards leven gevonden kunnen gaan worden. Bepaalde, door organismen uitgeademde gassen kunnen in principe worden waargenomen in de atmosferen van exoplaneten – planeten rond andere sterren dan onze zon. Dit idee, dat al is ontwikkeld in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw, is nu gekoppeld aan een nieuwe waarnemingstechniek die gebruik maakt van relatief goedkope flux-collectoren - grote spiegeltelescopen die geen scherpe foto's kunnen maken, maar waarmee wel nauwkeurige spectroscopie kan worden gedaan. Herschel weegt zware schijf rond nabije ster

Astronomen hebben met de Herschel-ruimtetelescoop zwaar moleculair waterstof gevonden in de protoplanetaire schijf rond de nabije ster TW Hydrae. Ze schatten het gewicht van de gasachtige schijf op 50 keer de massa van Jupiter. Zwaar waterstof (het HD-molecuul) bestaat uit één waterstofatoom en één deuteriumatoom, en wordt beschouwd als een indicator voor het hoofdbestanddeel van de schijf: moleculair waterstof, dat bestaat uit twee waterstofatomen. Melkwegkern spuwt deeltjesstromen door geboorte van miljoenen sterren

Een continue stroom van geladen deeltjes barst uit het centrum van ons sterrenstelsel, de Melkweg. De deeltjesstroom is een bijproduct van de geboorte van nieuwe sterren en lijkt medeverantwoordelijk voor het magnetisch veld dat de Melkweg doordringt. Een internationale onderzoeksgroep met onder anderen de Nederlandse astronoom Marijke Haverkorn (Nijmegen en Leiden) publiceert dit resultaat op 3 januari in Nature. Lees meer

Huub Rottgering, hoogleraar sterrenkunde en directeur van de Sterrewacht Leiden, heeft een ERC advanced grant gekregen om te bestuderen hoe en wanneer de eerste quasars, melkwegstelsels, en clusters van melkwegstelsels gevormd werden. Hij zal gebruik maken van LOFAR, een nieuwe zeer gevoelige radio telescoop die in Nederland gebouwd is.

Verste sterrenstelsel tot op heden ontdekt met zwaartekrachtlens

Door gebruik te maken van één van de krachtigste zoomlensen van de natuur heeft een internationaal team van astronomen, waaronder dr. Rychard Bouwens, mogelijk het tot op heden verste sterrenstelsel waargenomen met de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop. Dit sterrenstelsel is waargenomen zoals het er 420 miljoen jaar na de oerknal uitzag. Hiermee wordt het recente record verbroken van het sterrenstelsel dat te zien was op een eXtreme-Deep-Field-opname zoals dat er 450 miljoen jaar na de oerknal uitzag. Prof. Simon Portegies Zwart heeft de eigenschappen van planeetbanen gebruikt om de evolutie te reconstrueren van een voor onmogelijk gehouden dubbelstersysteem met twee planeten. ‘Cosmic GDP’ crashes 97% as star formation slumps

While parts of the world experience economic hardship, a team of Portuguese, UK, Japanese, Italian and Dutch astronomers has found an even bigger slump happening on a cosmic scale. In the largest ever study of its kind, the international team of astronomers has established that the rate of formation of new stars in the Universe is now only 1/30th of its peak and that this decline is only set to continue. ESO-jubileumtentoonstelling in de oude Sterrewacht

Het jaar 2012 markeert de 50ste verjaardag van de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht. (ESO). Om dit te vieren worden wereldwijd activiteiten georganiseerd. Op 5 oktober 2012 wordt de ESO-jubileumtentoonstelling geopend in de historische Leidse Sterrewacht. Deze tentoonstelling, met de toepasselijke naam 'Spectaculair Heelal', bestaat uit adembenemende opnamen die zijn gemaakt met de ESO-telescopen, en beelden ván deze telescopen. Op dezelfde dag wordt met de Very Large Telescope het object waargenomen dat de winnaar van de competitie ‘Kies wat de VLT waarneemt’ heeft gekozen. ALMA boekt zoet resultaat

Een team van astronomen, onder wie Ewine van Dishoeck, heeft met behulp van de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) suikermoleculen ontdekt in het gas rond een jonge, zonachtige ster. Het is voor het eerst dat er in de ruimte rond zo’n ster suiker is gedetecteerd. Disintegrating Exoplanet

Matteo Brogi, Christoph Keller, Maria de Juan Ovelar, Matt Kenworthy and Ignas Snellen at Leiden Observatory together with Michiel Min at the UvA and Remco de Kok at SRON have found clear evidence that a faraway exoplanet is falling apart. New analysis of data from NASA’s Kepler satellite shows that this exoplanet, which orbits its host star every 16 hours, has a massive dust tail originating from its surface, similar to a comet’s tail. Their simple model can fully explain the observed asymmetric transit light curve including the small brightness increase before the transit due to forward scattering (see figure). Lees meer

Mher Kazandjian's paper gets covered in "Sky and Telescope" magazine

The recent paper of Mher Kazandjian (PhD student at Leiden Observatory) and Jihad Touma on the nucleus of M31 was covered by "Sky and Telescope" magazine. In the paper counter-rotation was proposed as the cause behind the doubling of the nucleus of M31. The counter-rotating population of stars, although much smaller in mass compared to the main population contributes significantly to the kinematics. Read more Article

Haili Hu krijgt VENI subsidie

Sterren kunnen trillen in hun resonantiefrequenties, welke informatie bevat over het ster-inwendige. Immers, net als bij muziekinstrumenten wordt de 'klank' bepaald door de grootte en opbouw. De zwaarste sterren ontploffen in een supernova-explosie aan het einde van hun leven. Een dergelijke ontploffing kan enorme gevolgen hebben voor een nabijgelegen ster. Het was echter nooit uitgerekend welk effect een supernova heeft op de stabiliteit van de banen van meervoudige stersystemen. Onder leiding van prof. dr. Simon Portegies Zwart van de Leidse Sterrewacht hebben master’s studente Tjibaria Pijloo en promovendus Daniel Caputo deze berekeningen nu voor het eerst uitgevoerd. Venusovergang in Timor-Leste

Om de Venusovergang van 6 Juni 2012 te vieren heeft Universe Awareness (UNAWE) een onderwijs project ontwikkeld in Timor-Leste (Oost-Timor), wat een van de weinige landen ter wereld is waar de gehele overgang te zien is. Dit project zal het grootste wetenschappelijke evenement zijn dat ooit is georganiseerd in Timor-Leste en het zal ook het eerste sterrenkundige evenement zijn dat daar wordt gehouden sinds het land tien jaar geleden zijn onafhankelijkheid heeft verklaard. Lofar ontrafelt botsende clusters van sterrenstels

Een internationaal team van astronomen heeft met de Internationale LOFAR Telescoop van ASTRON, het Nederlands instituut voor radioastronomie, de vorming van de cluster van sterrenstelsels Abell 2256 in kaart gebracht. Abell 2256 is een groep van honderden sterrenstelsels op een afstand van 800 miljoen lichtjaar. “De structuur die we zien op de radiobeelden die we met LOFAR hebben gemaakt, geeft ons informatie over de oorsprong van deze cluster", legt eerste auteur dr. MIRI instrument handed over to NASA

The mid-infrared camera/spectrometer MIRI for the James Webb Space Telescope, the flagship successor to the Hubble Space Telescope to be launched in 2018, was formally handed over to NASA on May 9th. The instrument was built and extensively tested by a consortium of European institutes, including NOVA, and is now complete. The contribution of the Netherlands was crucial, ensuring the spectroscopic capability of MIRI. Much of the work was carried out at the Optical-Infrared Instrumentation group at ASTRON, and scientific leads were Leiden astronomers Ewine van Dishoeck and Bernhard Brandl. More info (in Dutch)

Astronomical technology for other sciences

Technologiestichting STW approved funding of a new, 1.1MEuro project at the Sterrewacht to transfer astronomical technology to other sciences. Renowned telescope builder Rob Hammerschlag, together with Christoph Keller, will develop and build light-weight towers with a stable platform for astronomical, meteorological and civil-engineering measurements. Based on ideas first realized with the Dutch Open Telescope (DOT), these towers will be developed together with Dutch industry and users in the areas of meteorology, hydrology and air-polution studies in the Netherlands and on volcanic islands and arctic and antarctic ice sheets.

Rutger van Haasteren has won the Gravitational Wave International Committee Thesis Prize for his 2011 Leiden PhD thesis "Gravitational Wave detection and data analysis for Pulsar Timing Arrays", supervised by Yuri Levin. VISTA Stares Deep into the Cosmos

ESO's VISTA telescope has created the widest deep view of the sky ever made using infrared light. This new picture of an unremarkable patch of sky comes from the UltraVISTA survey and reveals more than 200 000 galaxies. It forms just one part of a huge collection of fully processed images from all the VISTA surveys that is now being made available by ESO to astronomers worldwide. Zeldzame archeologische vondst: een oude stad in het verre heelal

Een internationaal team van astronomen heeft een zware cluster met rode, volwassen sterrenstelsels gevonden in het vroege heelal. Hij bevindt zich op een afstand van 10,5 miljard lichtjaar van de aarde en is daarmee de verst verwijderde rode cluster die ooit is waargenomen. 'Onverklaarde’ donkere kern van Abell 520

Nieuwe resultaten met de Hubble Ruimtetelescoop hebben bevestigd dat de donkere kern van de gigantische cluster van botsende sterrenstelsels Abell 520 inderdaad bestaat uit donkere materie. De cluster blijft daarmee een buitenbeetje. In soortgelijke kosmische schrootwolken blijven gewone materie (gas en sterren) en donkere materie in elkaars nabijheid, ook na een zware botsing. Sterrenkunde-college weer in de oude Sterrewacht

De eerstejaars bachelorstudenten hebben deze week de spits afgebeten, en hebben als eerste weer sterrenkunde-college in de oude Sterrewacht aan de Witte SIngel gehad. In de Kaiserzaal, die 150 jaar geleden in gebruik werd genomen als 'observatiezaal', kregen de studenten les in de basisbeginselen van het waarnemen. Na een rondleiding langs de historische koepels is er met de houten 6-duims kijker uit 1838 nog naar Jupiter en de Orionnevel gekeken. Binnenkort zal er een nieuwe telescoop worden geinstalleerd, bekostigd door het LUF/Gratama fonds, speciaal voor het eerstejaars practicum. Grote foto

VICI-beurs toegekend aan Ignas Snellen

Ignas Snellen heeft een NWO VICI-beurs gewonnen voor zijn onderzoek aan planeten rondom andere sterren dan de zon. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de atmosferen van deze exoplaneten, met als doel te achterhalen uit wat voor gassen ze zijn opgebouwd. Superzware zwarte gaten breken ‘starbursts’ af

Met behulp van de APEX-telescoop hebben astronomen een sterk verband gevonden tussen de krachtigste uitbarstingen van stervorming in het vroege heelal en de zwaarste sterrenstelsels van nu. De hevige stervorming in de sterrenstelsels werd abrupt afgebroken, waardoor ze eindigden als de huidige zware – maar passieve – stelsels van ouder wordende sterren. Herschel vindt overvloed aan water rond jonge ster

Sterrenkundigen hebben met de Herschel-ruimtetelescoop voor het eerst koude waterdamp gevonden in een planeetvormende schijf rond een jonge ster. Deze ontdekking duidt erop dat deze schijf, die bezig is zich tot een planetenstelsel te ontwikkelen, grote hoeveelheden water bevat en dat planeten met oceanen, zoals de aarde, wel eens op veel meer plaatsen in het heelal zouden kunnen voorkomen. Water vapour reveals how stars form around a black hole in the early universe

An international team led by astronomer Paul van der Werf (Leiden University, The Netherlands) has discovered that a black hole in the young universe is surrounded by a large disk of gas and dust, where stars form rapidly and which is so dense that light can barely escape from it. Leiden de Sitter cosmology

The new Leiden de Sitter cosmology programme has been awarded a 800,000 euro grant by NWO with which to appoint four PhD students. The MSc+PhD programme, a joint initiative with the Institute Lorentz for theoretical physics, aims to train young researchers in both the physics and astronomy of the early universe, focussing on the relation between fundamental theory and observations. Science Magazine honours UNAWE

Universe Awareness (UNAWE), initiated by prof. George Miley in 2005, has been recognised for its educational value by Science Magazine with its Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE) award. UNAWE shares the prize with an interactive drawing workshop called Deadly Moons. Science Magazine introduced the SPORE award as a means to showcase the best educational resources that are available on the Internet and to bring them to a wider audience. Earlier this year, the European Union granted 1.9 million Euros to the UNAWE project designed to deliver a 3-year Universe Awareness programme in six countries: Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom. 16th Antenna at Atacama

The first European antenna for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has reached new heights, having been transported to the observatory’s Array Operations Site (AOS) on 27 July 2011. The 12-metre diameter antenna has arrived at the Chajnantor plateau, 5000 metres above sea level. Toponderzoekschool NOVA wordt verlengd

Het kabinet heeft in de plannen voor het hoger onderwijs die afgelopen vrijdag zijn gepresenteerd, de financiering van de Nederlandse Onderzoekschool voor Astronomie (NOVA) verlengd. De toponderzoekscholen NOVA en het Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials kregen vorig jaar na een evaluatie het predicaat 'exemplary' omdat ze hebben bewezen tot de absolute wereldtop te behoren. Verste quasar ontdekt

Een team van Europese astronomen heeft met behulp van ESO’s Very Large Telescope en tal van andere telescopen de tot nu toe verste quasar ontdekt en onderzocht. Sterrenstelsels manisch depressief

Het leven van sterrenstelsels wordt gekenmerkt door sterk wisselende gedragingen, waarbij ze of enorm veel nieuwe sterren vormen, of nauwelijks sterren vormen, maar niet veel daartussenin. De Hubble-telescoop kijkt verder dan ooit

De Leidse astronoom Rychard Bouwens heeft met de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop verder het heelal ingekeken dan ooit tevoren. Gigantische botsing van clusters

Onze astronomen hebben een enorme botsing tussen twee clusters van sterrenstelsels ontdekt. In waarnemingen, onder andere gedaan met de Westerbork radiotelescoop in Drenthe, vonden zij een gigantische schokgolf met een lengte van wel 100 keer die van onze eigen Melkweg. New Mode for VLT’s NACO to Image Exoplanets

An international collaboration of astronomers, including Leiden's Matthew Kenworthy, has recently commissioned a new observing mode for the NACO adaptive optics instrument attached to ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) on Paranal. Superstorm van giftig gas op exoplaneet

Nederlandse astronomen hebben voor het eerst een superstorm waargenomen in de atmosfeer van een exoplaneet, de bekende ‘hete Jupiter’ HD209458b. Zeer nauwkeurige waarnemingen van koolmonoxide laten zien dat dit gas met enorme snelheid van de extreem hete dagzijde van de planeet naar de koelere nachtzijde stroomt. De waarnemingen omvatten nog een andere bijzondere primeur: de meting van de baansnelheid van de planeet zelf, die een directe bepaling van zijn massa mogelijk maakt. On 13 April Dr. Roeland Rengelink was installed as Stadsdeelwethouder (Alderman) for the Central district of Amsterdam. Herschel

Een team astronomen onder leiding van Ewine van Dishoeck heeft met het PACS-instrument op de Herschel-telescoop verrassende eerste resultaten geboekt. Ze namen onder meer spectra (of: vingerafdrukken) van water van de wolk rond L 1157 die duidelijk laten zien waar de ster energie dumpt (zie afbeelding 1). Nieuw licht op donkere materie in sterre

Hongsheng Zhao heeft een onverwacht verband gevonden tussen de raadselachtige donkere materie en de zichtbare sterren in sterrenstelsels. Deze ontdekking laat een tot dusver onbekende kant van de donkere materie zien, die verstrekkende gevolgen kan hebben, en zelfs tot herziening van ons huidige begrip van de zwaartekracht zou kunnen leiden. Hyperactieve sterrenstelsels

Een internationaal team van astronomen uit de VS en Leiden heeft voor de eerste keer de snelheid kunnen meten van sterren in een sterrenstelsel op een afstand van 11 miljard lichtjaar. De sterren blijken met ongeveer 1.5 miljoen km/uur bijna tweemaal zo snel door de ruimte te bewegen als de zon in ons Melkwegstelsel. Schijngestalten van een exoplaneet

Ignas Snellen, Ernst de Mooij en Simon Albrecht laten voor het eerst zien dat een planeet rondom een andere ster dan de zon net zulke schijngestalten vertoont als onze maan. PhD student, Huib Intema, at Leiden Observatory has been awarded a "Jansky Fellowship" by the US-based National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Karin Öberg wins NASA Hubble Fellow

PhD student Karin Oberg has been awarded one of the 2009 Hubble Fellowships. These prestigious fellowships are awarded annually after a worldwide competition, to young researchers of exceptional ability. They may use them to work for three years at a US university of their choice. Karin, who will take her fellowship to Harvard to study the role of ices in star formation, is the 9th Leiden PhD to win such a fellowship! Press release: Astronomisch trio breekt submillimeter record

Drie observatoria in Hawaii zijn samengevoegd tot 's werelds krachtigste submillimeter telescoop, de Extended SubMillimeter Array (eSMA). Geavanceerde computer-technieken creëren een virtuele telescoop met een diameter van maar liefst 782 meter. Dit levert een ongekend scherpe blik op het heelal in een golflengte bereik waar dichte stervorminggebieden doorzichtig worden. Wetenschapsdag 2008

Op 19 oktober bezochten ruim 450 personen, waaronder zeer veel kinderen, de Oude Sterrewacht in het kader van de Nationale Wetenschapsdag. Met medewerking van de Jongerenwerkgroep Sterrenkunde, de Werkgroep Leidse Sterrenkunde en de Leidse vereniging voor Weer- en Sterrenkunde is het een gezellige dag geworden, met films, rondleidingen, een astronomische rommelmarkt, heel veel mini-marsen en mini-milky-ways en een boeken- en sterrenkaartverkoop. Astronoom Ivo Labbé wint de eerste Van Marum Prijs

Sterrenkundige Ivo Labbé zal op 26 september de eerste van Marum Prijs ontvangen. De prijs is toegekend door de Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen. Labbé wint de prijs voor zijn "baanbrekende" promotieonderzoek over het vroege heelal. Hij ontdekte dat in het verre verleden, 2 tot 3 miljard jaar na de Big Bang, reeds volwassen melkwegstelsels bestonden. Lees meer

Astronomen 'zien' planeten in gas rond jonge sterren

Een internationaal team van astronomen, gecentreerd rond oud Leiden promovendus Klaus Pontoppidan en de Leidse Spinozapremiewinnares Ewine van Dishoeck, heeft voor de eerste keer moleculair gas in kaart gebracht rond jonge sterren op plekken waar nieuwe planeten kunnen ontstaan. De verdeling en de bewegingen van het gas duiden erop dat er mogelijk al jonge planeten zijn gevormd. De sterrenkundigen deden hun ontdekking met het CRIRES-instrument op ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chili. Hun bevindingen worden gepubliceerd in de Astrophysical Journal van 10 september. Lees meer.

: Oortlezing 2008; Professor Simon White is a specialist in theoretical studies of the formation of galaxies, and the formation of structure in the Universe. Since 1994, he is director of the Max Planck Institut für Astrophysik in Garching, Germany. He is a leader in simulating the emergence of structure in the universe. This involves studies of the predicted distribution of dark matter, and the properties of galaxies which have formed in the dark matter halos. His simulations have shown that so-called "Cold Dark Matter" can generate matter distributions which agree very well with observations. Publ. 17-04-2008

: Baby sterrenstelsels gaan gebukt onder overgewicht; Een internationaal team van astronomen heeft sterrenstelsels ontdekt in het jonge heelal die lijden aan acuut overgewicht. De sterrenstelsels hebben 200 miljard maal de massa van de zon, maar hun afmeting bedraagt slechts 5000 lichtjaar. Ze zijn daarmee vele malen compacter dan grote sterrenstelsels in het huidige heelal. De resultaten van het team zijn deze week verschenen in de Astrophysical Journal Letters. Publ. 17-04-2008

: Planetoïde vernoemd naar Willem de Zwijger; De planetoïde (kleine planeet) met nummer 12151 draagt vanaf deze maand de naam Oranje-Nassau. Hij is op voordracht van Dr. Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld van de Leidse Sterrewacht vernoemd naar Stadhouder Willem I (1533-1584), prins van Oranje-Nassau en leider van de Nederlandse opstand tegen het Spaanse gezag. : Discovering Teenage Galaxies; Staring for the equivalent of every night for two weeks at the same little patch of sky with ESO's Very Large Telescope, an international team of astronomers has found the extremely faint light from teenage galaxies billions of light years away. These galaxies, which the research team believes are the building blocks of normal galaxies like our Milky Way, had eluded detection for three decades, despite intensive searches. : Leidse studenten ontdekken mogelijk exoplaneet; Studenten sterrenkunde aan de Universiteit Leiden hebben een exoplaneet, een planeet buiten ons eigen zonnestelsel, ontdekt. Het hemellichaam, net zo groot als Jupiter, draait in tweeëneenhalve dag om een ster die veel op onze zon lijkt. De afstand tot de ster is zo klein dat het aan het oppervlak van de planeet meer dan 1000 graden is. De voorlopige naam van het object is OGLE2-TR-L9. : Astrochemici vinden alcohol in kosmische cocktail; Onderzoekers van de Leidse Sterrewacht zijn erin geslaagd bij een temperatuur van 260 graden onder nul ethanol te destilleren uit een cocktail van waterstofatomen en ruimte ijs. De laboratorium experimenten laten zien hoe in de ruimte complexe moleculen kunnen ontstaan. : Planeetvorming veroorzaakt circumstellaire luchtverontreiniging; Een team van Leidse sterrenkundigen heeft aanwijzingen gevonden dat rond IRS48, een jonge ster vergelijkbaar met onze zon, een nieuwe planeet aan het ontstaan is. : Sterrenstelsels lijden onder jeugdtrauma; Leidse astronomen hebben aanwijzingen gevonden voor een gewelddadig verleden van volwassen sterrenstelsels. Kosmische botsingen tussen jeugdige stelsels veroorzaken een ongekend intensieve periode van stervorming, om nog maar te zwijgen van de groeispurt van een superzwaar zwart gat in het centrum. : Rode reuzen rillen; De Leidse astronome Saskia Hekker heeft in de afgelopen vier jaar het turbulente leven van rode reuzen onderzocht. Trillingen aan het oppervlak van deze zeer grote sterren vertellen veel over hun opbouw. Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat de ster als geheel groter en kleiner wordt, maar deze galactische vorm van Bibberitus kent nog een variant: delen van de ster blijken uit te bollen, terwijl andere delen krimpen. : Neon reclame in de ruimte; Nederlandse en Amerikaanse astronomen zien voor de eerste keer neon in de schijven van stof en gas rond jonge sterren. Als een soort kosmisch reclamebord belicht neon de plek waar nieuwe planeten kunnen ontstaan. Neon reageert niet met andere stoffen en is daarom een ideaal medium om planeetvorming te onderzoeken. : Dutch Astronomy Olympiad; Last week, 20 high school students visited Leiden Observatory for a Masterclass in astronomy, to prepare them for the final of the Dutch Astronomy Olympiad. The final and reward ceremony took place at Space Expo, Noordwijk, and the winner is Joost Broens from Leusden (Utrecht). This fall he will visit the observatory of La Palma, and carry out his own observations with the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope. For a photo impression of the Masterclass and the final, click here. : Not a farewell; One day after Prof.Dr. Tim de Zeeuw has handed over his task as Wetenschappelijk Directeur (Science Director) the Leiden Observatory organized a not-a-farewell party. After a pleasant borrel and many kind words all members of the Observatory joined a festive buffet to wish Tim all the best with his new job as ESO's Director General. See here for some pictures.

: Sterrewacht Dag; Although rain clouds were hanging over our heads at departure to the beach, it soon cleared up to become a windy but sunny afternoon. Some ventured the cold sea water, others showed their kite-flying skills. Only two sandcastles were build, both exquisite examples of architectual design. See here for some pictures.

: Sterrewacht BBQ; On a rainy afternoon where Leiden got flooded by a monsoon the Kaiser Association organized the yearly BBQ. No rain could stop us... Anyway the quality of food was excellent and the mood was great. See here for some pictures.

: Oort Lecture 2007; This years Oort Lecture given by Prof.Dr. Scott Tremaine on 'Nieuwe Werelden, op zoek naar planeten buiten ons zonnestelsel' is now available in video

: Ultraviolet licht pusht chemie tussen de sterren; Experimenten in het laboratorium voor astrofysica aan de Leidse Sterrewacht laten zien dat koolmonoxide (CO) ijs veel gemakkelijker door ultraviolet licht wordt verdampt, dan tot nu toe werd aangenomen. Voor modellen die de vorming van sterren en planeten beschrijven betekent dit een flinke omstelling. Tot nu toe werd de verdamping van CO door licht bij lage temperaturen nauwelijks als relevant beschouwd. De nieuwe resultaten veranderen het gangbare beeld van de chemische evolutie rond jonge sterren. Lees meer.

: Earth-like Planet found; Astronomers have discovered the most Earth-like planet outside our Solar System to date, an exoplanet with a radius only 50% larger than the Earth and capable of having liquid water. Using the ESO 3.6-m telescope, a team of Swiss, French and Portuguese scientists discovered a super-Earth about 5 times the mass of the Earth that orbits a red dwarf, already known to harbour a Neptune-mass planet. The astronomers have also strong evidence for the presence of a third planet with a mass about 8 Earth masses. Read more.

: Oort Lecture 2007; This years Oort Lecture will be given by Prof.Dr. Scott Tremaine on 'Nieuwe Werelden, op zoek naar planeten buiten ons zonnestelsel'. Professor Scott Tremaine is a specialist in astrophysical dynamics. His textbook on galactic dynamics, written in 1987 together with James Binney, can be found on every astronomers and students bookshelf. Read more (in Dutch).

: Nederlandse Sterrenkunde Olympiade van start; Op 22 februari 2007 is de eerste Nederlandse Sterrenkunde Olympiade (NeSO) van start gegaan. De Sterrenkunde Olympiade is een wedstrijd voor middelbare scholieren in de bovenbouw HAVO/VWO. De winnaar mag een eigen waarneemproject uitvoeren op de Sterrenwacht van La Palma op de Canarische Eilanden. Lees meer.

: Bruno Ernst Symposium; Om zijn verdiensten voor het onderwijs en de wetenschapspopularisatie niet ongemerkt te laten passeren organiseren de opleidingen sterrenkunde, wiskunde en natuurkunde van de Universiteit Leiden een middagsymposium op vrijdag 30 maart a.s. Lees meer en schrijf u in.

: Fotonen in het vroege heelal niet nuchter; De fotonen die worden geproduceerd in het centrum van de zon zouden normaal binnen enkele seconden het zonneoppervlak moeten bereiken. Toch is het licht dat de ruimte in stroomt reeds miljoenen jaren oud omdat de fotonen ontelbare malen verstrooien aan de gasdeeltjes waaruit de zon bestaat. Met een radicaal nieuwe aanpak beschrijft de Leidse astronoom Jelle Ritzerveld deze dronkemanswandeling en komt tot de verrassende conclusie dat ook in het vroege heelal de fotonen allesbehalve nuchter waren. : Sterrewacht honors Douwe Breimer; Today, February 5th, at a farewell reception for Rector Magnificus Prof Dr. D.D. Breimer, Prof Dr. K. Kuijken revealed that the IAU (responsible for the naming of heavenly bodies) has officially adopted the name "Breimer" for asteroid 10980 (see NASA's Solar System database), in recognition of his great support of astronomy in Leiden. The asteroid was discovered in 1973 by our own Cees and Ingrid van Houten. May Breimer continue to circle the solar system, and Leiden in particular, for many years to come!

: New Director-General ESO; Starting September 1, 2007, prof P.T. de Zeeuw will be the new director-general of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). With headquarters near Munich (Germany), ESO operates some of the world's foremost observatories at various locations in Chile. Tim de Zeeuw will be the fourth Dutch astronomer and, after H.L. van der Laan, the second Leiden astronomy professor to be named to this important position. It is noteworthy that the other two Dutch ESO directors-general, A. Blaauw and L. Woltjer, were both Leiden graduates! See more at ESO or in Dutch.

: Sinterklaas; Each year the Sterrewacht is visited by Sinterklaas. 2006 is no exception. Some Sterrewachters are put on the spot, others are introduced to the wonders of dutch tradition. All have learned how to sing Sinterklaas-songs. See some pictures.

: Galactische radiatoren; In het centrum van sterrenstelsels bevinden zich vaak grote ophopingen van gas. Heel uiteenlopende fysische en chemische processen bepalen de eigenschappen van dit gas. De Leidse astronoom Rowin Meijerink heeft voor het eerst deze eigenschappen in detail onderzocht. Hiermee is het mogelijk uit astronomische metingen af te leiden wat er in de kern van een sterrenstelsel gebeurt. Lees meer.

: Spider Galaxy eet melkwegstelsels; Een team sterrenkundigen onder leiding van de Leidse astronoom Prof. George Miley heeft met de NASA/ESA Hubble ruimtetelescoop een van de dusver grootste sterrenstelsels in beeld gebracht. De nieuwe Hubble-opnamen laten zien hoe dit mega-sterrenstelsel tientallen kleinere sterrenstelsels opslokt. Lees meer

: Nobel Prize in Physics 2006; This year the Physics Prize is awarded for work that looks back into the infancy of the Universe and attempts to gain some understanding of the origin of galaxies and stars. It is based on measurements made with the help of the COBE satellite launched by NASA in 1989. The two astronomy prize winners are John C. Mather from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, USA, and George F. Smoot from the University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA. Read more

: Bewustwording heelal brengt kinderen verder; Astronomen, onderwijsdeskundigen en antropologen komen van 9 tot 13 oktober bijeen in het Lorentz Center (Leiden) in een workshop 'Universe Awareness'. Universe Awareness (UNAWE) is een nieuw internationaal programma, dat gericht is op economisch benadeelde kinderen tussen 4 en 10 jaar in ontwikkelingslanden en in Europa. Men wil kinderen bewust maken van de schoonheid van het heelal. Ook minister Maria van der Hoeven (Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap) zal deelnemen aan deze workshop en hem officieel openen, ter gelegenheid van haar bezoek aan het Lorentz Center. Lees meer

: Stellaire geboortebeperking; Een internationaal team van sterrenkundigen, geleid door de Leidse promovenda Mariska Kriek, heeft ontdekt dat veel grote sterrenstelsels in het jonge heelal vooral bestaan uit oude sterren. Deze vondst roept de vraag op hoe het mogelijk is dat deze sterrenstelsels al zo vroeg zo volwassen zijn geworden. Lees meer

: SMART1 impacts on Moon; SMART-1 was the first of ESA's Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology. It travelled to the Moon using solar-electric propulsion and carrying a battery of miniaturised instruments. On September 3 it crashed on the Moon. Read more

: Only 8 planets left; Astronomers at the IAU General Assembly in Prague have decided on a definition for planets that does not leave room for pluto. So our solar system now is down to eight planets again. Read more

: Universe Awareness Kickoff; A panel composed of three members of the Universe Awareness International Steering Committee and the project manager launched the UNAWE initiative officially at a press conference on the morning of August 22 at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly. : Top Research School extended; The NOVA directory Prof.Dr. P.T. de Zeeuw is delighted to report that he has received the formal letter from the Minister of OCW confirming that the NOVA Program (and the similar programs of the other five top research schools) has been extended through 2013, with a further five year extension depending on the outcome of a review planned for 2009/10! This tremendously brightens the future of the Dutch national astronomy effort, including of course our own programs in Leiden.

: 2 VENI, 2 VIDI; The Sterrewacht has been very successful in this year's NWO 'vernieuwingsimpulsronde' and was granted a total of four awards. Congratulations to Clovis Hopman (VENI), Herma Cuppen (VENI), Yuri Levin (VIDI) and Joop Schaye (VIDI)!
