Giant  cosmic tsunami wakes up comatose galaxies
Galaxies are often found in clusters, which contain many ‘red and dead’ members that stopped forming stars in the distant past. Now an international team of astronomers, led by Andra Stroe of Leiden Observatory and David Sobral of Leiden and the University of Lisbon, have discovered that these comatose galaxies can sometimes come back to life. Oort Lecture 2015
Cosmic origins: everything from nothing is the title of this years Oort lecture by Prof. Carlos Frenk. He s one of the originators of the Cold Dark Matter theory for the origin of galaxies and cosmic structures in the Universe. He has done pioneering work on the development of large computer simulations recreating the growth and evolution of cosmic structures. Read more
