The following categories of scientific personnel (Wetenschappelijk Personeel/ WP) exist:
- Vaste Wetenschappelijke Staf):
Universitaire Docenten, Universitaire Hoofddocenten and
Hoogleraren correspond roughly to Assistant, Associate and Full
Professors. They are all on the payroll of the University. There are
also Buitengewone and Bijzondere Hoogleraren (Extraordinary and
Adjunct Professors). These are practically always part-time, the
former on the University payroll, the latter sponsored by an external
organisation.
- Postdoctoral Fellows (Postdocs):
These are are part of the Tijdelijke Wetenschappelijke Staf
(Temporary Scientific Staff) and are at Leiden usually for periods
of one to three years. They are generally supported by funds
external to the University.
- Promovendi (Ph.D Candidates):
Although equivalent to (post)graduate students elsewhere, they are
traditionally not considered to be `students' but rather junior staff
members. They are either funded by the University, by the Nationale
Onderzoekschool NOVA, or by the NWO equivalent to NSF/ PPARC. Some are
partly funded by SRON, the Dutch space agency. An increasingly
important source of outside funding is the European Union through its
Framework Programs. Ph.D. candidates are also part of the Tijdelijke Wetenschappelijke Staf (Temporary Scientific Staff)
Who are all these people? An (almost) up-to-date list can be accessed
at the Sterrewacht Website, and there is also a rogue's gallery on the
wall next to the staircase on the fourth floor of the J.H. Oort
building. Present tasks of members of the scientific staff of the
Sterrewacht are listed in the Appendix.
