The Opleiding Sterrenkunde is headed by an Opleidingsdirecteur (OD), who is responsible for the astronomy curriculum and the assignment of teaching duties to the Sterrewacht staff. Two Student Advisors (presently Koen Kuijken and Rudolf le Poole) for the bachelor and master phases respectively are responsible for day-to-day coaching of students. The Opleidingsdirecteur (presently Frank Israel) is advised by the Opleidingscommissie (OC: chair Paul van der Werf) consisting of students, teaching staff and student advisors; he reports to the Education Member of the FWN Board. As much of the curriculum, especially in the bachelor phase involves physics courses, the Opleidingsdirecteur, the bachelor student advisor, students and teachers also regularly confer with their counterparts from the Physics Division in the Gezamelijke Opleidingscommissie.
Just as the other astronomy institutes in the Netherlands, Leiden also
sends a member of the teaching staff and a (graduate) student with
teaching duties to the Nationale Onderwijscommissie which, for
reasons of efficiency, is identical to the NOVA
Onderwijscommissie and is commonly known as LOCNOC which advises the
Opleidingsdirecteuren of the various institutes as well as the NOVA
Board (see below ...). For memberships, check the latest Annual
Report:
