The onderzoekinstituut - OZI - is called Sterrewacht Leiden. Note that Sterrewacht is spelled in the traditional manner with a capital `S' and without the `n' of sterrenwacht, the generic Dutch word for an astronomical observatory in the presently mandatory spelling. The OZI structure was devised a decade ago in order to give a more flexible and less bureaucratic structure for carrying out research. The most important gain of this relatively recent structure was the creation of a Wetenschappelijk Directeur (WD) heading the onderzoekinstituut and reporting directly to the Decaan of the FWN. The Wetenschappelijk Directeur (presently Koen Kuijken) may be advised in practically all matters by the Wetenschappelijke Raad (WR: chair Frank Israel) consisting of all tenured faculty and scientific staff. Required by law, there is also an Instituutsraad (IR: chair Erik Deul), consisting of two representatives each of the wetenschappelijk personeel, the administratief en ondersteunend personeel, and the students. The day-to-day management of the Sterrewacht is carried out by a Management Team (MT) which meets weekly.
