Academie-Gebouw

The main university building located on the Rapenburg in the centre of Leiden. It was originally a nunnery, but was taken away from the Roman Catholic Church after the reformation, and subsequently given to the newly founded (1575) university. This is where the formal and ceremonial Ph.D examinations take place. Note that this building once housed a telescope platform on its roof!

Literally: `Third Money-Flow'. Term used when referring to research funding channeled from third i.e. non-government parties, such as European Union, private Foundations, Companies etc. (see also eerste/tweede geldstroom).

Doctorandus (drs.)

Title earned by undergraduates upon completion of their University education. It is equivalent to a Master's degree in US terms.

Literally: `First Money-Flow'. Term used when referring to indirect research funding by the government through the universities (see also tweede/derde geldstroom).
