This translates as the `Royal Netherlandse Academy of (Arts and) Sciences' and plays a similar role in national academic life as does the Royal Society in England or the National Academy of Sciences in the USA. Its headquarters are in Amsterdam. One of the annual responsibilities of the KNAW is the allocation of the KNAW professorships (Akademie-Hoogleraren). These are very prestigious personal positions for senior researchers, George Miley is the local example.
