The Society of Collaborating Universities (VSNU) is primarily the organized lobby of the Dutch universities. It represents its member's interests (which not always the same) at various levels, including the government, political institutions, civil service and private organisations. Rather imprtant within the Dutch context, the VSNU also acts as an employers club negotiating university labour contracts and conditions with both the government and labour organisations for the whole university sector (52 000 jobs). The VSNU is governed by an `Algemeen Bestuur' (General Board) in which all universities are represented (usully by their President). It is headed by an independent Chair, and meets about eight times a year. The present Chair is Sijbolt Noorda.
