This is the Dutch national space agency. Space astronomy is one of
its activities. SRON has headquarters in Utrecht, dealing with
high-energy astrophysics (X-rays and
-rays) and a branch in
Groningen dealing with low-energy astronomy (infrared and
submillimeter wavelengths). Many Leiden astronomers were or are
involved with space projects through SRON-Groningen, such as IRAS
(US-NL-UK), ISO (ESA) and Herschel (ESA). There used to be a space
research group in Leiden, but this section of SRON was moved to
Utrecht in 1994. The Director of SRON is Karel Wakker and the Adjunct
Director is Roel Gathier (who began by being an astronomer). SRON is
governed by a Bestuur whose chairman is A.P.M. Baede;
Ewine van Dishoeck is the only astronomical member of this bestuur.
