The Nationale Onderzoekschool voor Astronomie (NOVA), was set up during the early nineties in response to an initiative of the Minister for Education and Science. NOVA provides national coordination in the training of researchers in astronomy (primarily Ph.D level) and is a collaboration of astronomers in Leiden, Groningen, Amsterdam (UvA), Utrecht and Nijmegen. Those members of the Leiden staff that are involved with Ph.D level education are also members of NOVA. NOVA was one of the first onderzoekscholen to be recognised by the KNAW. Its formal headquarters are now in Groningen (RUG) and its Director is Tim de Zeeuw. NOVA is governed by a Bestuur chaired by Piet van der Kruit (Groningen). The Bestuur is advised by an Onderzoekcommissie and an Onderwijscommissie - LOCNOC (see above).
