The Faculteit Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen - FWN (Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) consists of various institutes/schools: Sterrenkunde - Sterrewacht (Astronomy), Natuurkunde - LION (Physics), Wiskunde - MI (Mathematics) - Informatica - LIACS (Computer Sciences), Scheikunde - LIC (Chemistry), Biologie - IBL (Biology), Farmacie - LACDR (Pharmaceutics and Drug Research). Two additional institutes of national importance also belong to the FWN; these are the National Herbarium (in conjuction with the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis) and the Leiden Hortus Botanicus.

The Department is headed by the Faculteitsbestuur (FB) chaired by the Decaan Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel. The other members of the Faculteitsbestuur are Gert Jan van Helden (managing director), Jan Kijne, who is in charge of educational matters and Jörn Venderbos who takes care of student matters.

The Faculteitsbestuur is advised on all matters by an elected Faculteitsraad (FR) consisting of seven University personnel representatives and seven students. The only actual power of the FR is its right to approve or disapprove the annual budget and major reorganizations. There are no astronomy members of the FR at this moment.

The FWN also has a standing Science Committee, Commissie voor de wetenschapsbeoefening (WECO) advising on appointments and structural promotions for the scientific staff, and on grant applications for the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) or NWO. Ewine van Dishoeck chairs this committee, and Marijn Franx represents the Sterrewacht.

The FB regularly meets with the Wetenschappelijk Directeuren en with the Opleidingsdirecteuren on matters of science and education policy.
