- MIRI instrument handed over to NASA
- The mid-infrared camera/spectrometer MIRI for the James Webb Space Telescope, the flagship successor to the Hubble Space Telescope to be launched in 2018, was formally handed over to NASA on May 9th. The instrument was built and extensively tested by a consortium of European institutes, including NOVA, and is now complete. The contribution of the Netherlands was crucial, ensuring the spectroscopic capability of MIRI. Much of the work was carried out at the Optical-Infrared Instrumentation group at ASTRON, and scientific leads were Leiden astronomers Ewine van Dishoeck and Bernhard Brandl. More info (in Dutch)
